How to Check Your Bed Has Been Assembled Correctly

Think your bed is assembled but not quite sure everything is right? Use this simple checklist to check the frame, fixings, slats, supports, feet and headboard before you put the mattress on and start using your bed.

A correctly assembled bed should feel secure, stable and properly supported. Checking the important connection points now can help prevent movement, squeaks and avoidable damage later.

Quick Guide

01

Check the Frame

Make sure the main frame sections are correctly positioned and securely connected.

02

Check the Fixings

Check screws, bolts, brackets and connectors are fitted in the correct positions.

03

Check the Support

Make sure slats, centre supports, feet and other support components are correctly fitted.

04

Test the Bed

Check for rocking, movement, gaps, loose components or unusual noises before use.

Why Is It Important to Check Your Bed?

Even when a bed looks finished, a small assembly problem can affect how stable the whole structure feels. A fixing that has not been fully secured, a slat that has not been positioned correctly or a support that is not sitting properly can create movement once the bed is under load.

Taking a few minutes to inspect the finished assembly gives you an opportunity to correct problems before the mattress, bedding and normal use make them harder to identify.

What You Need

Your Assembly Instructions

Keep the manufacturer's assembly instructions nearby. Different beds use different fittings, support systems and construction methods, so the supplied instructions should always take priority.

Basic Tools

You may need the screwdriver, Allen key or other tools supplied with the bed to check or adjust the relevant fixings. Do not use tools or fittings that are unsuitable for the bed.

STEP 1

Check the Main Frame

Start by looking at the overall structure of the bed. Side rails, headboard, footboard and other main frame sections should be positioned as shown in the assembly instructions.

Check that the frame sits squarely and that the joints are properly connected. There should not be obvious gaps between components that are supposed to be joined together.

If the frame appears twisted, uneven or incorrectly positioned, do not simply tighten everything further. Recheck the assembly instructions and make sure each component is in the correct position first.

STEP 2

Check Every Screw, Bolt and Connector

Go around the bed and inspect the visible fixings. Check that screws and bolts have been fitted in the correct locations and that connectors or brackets are seated correctly.

Fixings should be secure, but avoid overtightening them. Excessive force can damage threads, fittings or the surrounding material.

If a fixing will not tighten correctly, stops turning unusually early or appears damaged, stop and check the instructions rather than forcing it.

STEP 3

Check the Slats and Mattress Support

If your bed uses slats, check that every slat is correctly positioned and properly supported. Look along the full length of the bed to make sure there are no missing or incorrectly positioned slats.

If the bed has a centre support rail or additional support legs, check that these are fitted exactly as shown in the assembly instructions and are making the intended contact with the floor or frame.

Do not use the bed if a structural support component is missing, badly damaged or obviously incorrectly fitted.

STEP 4

Check the Feet and Floor Contact

Check each foot, leg or castor to make sure it is fitted correctly. The bed should sit securely rather than rocking from side to side.

Look underneath the bed where practical and check that support feet or legs are positioned as intended.

If the bed rocks, first establish whether the movement is coming from the bed itself or from uneven contact with the floor.

STEP 5

Check the Headboard

If your bed has a headboard, check that it is attached using the correct fixing method and that all mounting points are secure.

Gently test the headboard for excessive movement. A small amount of movement may depend on the design, but it should not feel loose, unstable or incorrectly attached.

If your headboard is attached to the bed frame, make sure the mounting points are aligned correctly before tightening the fixings.

STEP 6

Check Storage or Moving Parts

If your bed includes drawers, an ottoman lifting mechanism, a TV mechanism or another moving feature, check that all components have been assembled according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Open and close drawers or moving sections carefully and check that they move as intended without catching, rubbing or becoming unstable.

For beds with lifting mechanisms, do not continue using the mechanism if a component appears damaged, loose or unsafe.

TOP TIP: Do a Final Walk Around

Once you've finished assembling the bed, walk around the entire frame and check every visible connection. It is much easier to spot a missing screw, incorrectly positioned bracket or loose component before the mattress is placed on the bed.

The Final Stability Test

Once you've checked the individual components, gently test the completed bed.

Apply light pressure to different areas of the frame and listen and feel for unusual movement. The bed should feel secure rather than excessively rocking, shifting or twisting.

If you hear a squeak, feel movement or notice that part of the frame is loose, identify the source before continuing to use the bed. Do not assume that tightening every screw will solve the problem.

Common Assembly Problems

The Bed Rocks

Check the frame joints, feet, support legs and floor contact. Make sure the frame has been assembled squarely and that all relevant supports are correctly fitted.

There Is a Squeak

Identify exactly where the sound is coming from before making adjustments. The noise could be related to a joint, slat, fixing, foot, headboard or another contact point.

A Screw Will Not Tighten

Stop rather than forcing the fixing. Check that you have the correct screw, component and fitting position according to the assembly instructions.

The Slats Do Not Sit Correctly

Recheck the slat positions and support points. Do not force slats into place if they appear to be the wrong size or the frame has not been assembled correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my bed frame is assembled correctly?

Check the manufacturer's instructions and make sure every component is in the correct position, all required fixings are secure and the support system is correctly installed. The completed bed should feel stable and secure.

Should a newly assembled bed move?

A correctly assembled bed should not have excessive movement or rocking. If it does, identify whether the movement is coming from a joint, fixing, support, foot or the floor.

Why does my newly assembled bed squeak?

A squeak can be caused by movement between components such as frame joints, slats, bolts, feet, headboard connections or mattress-to-base contact. The best approach is to identify the exact source first.

Should I tighten every screw again?

Not necessarily. Check the assembly instructions and inspect the individual fixings. Tighten the relevant fixing appropriately rather than applying excessive force to every connection.

What if my bed is still unstable after assembly?

Stop and investigate the source of the instability. Recheck the assembly instructions and inspect the frame, supports, feet and fixings. If a structural component is damaged or the problem cannot be corrected, contact the supplier or manufacturer for advice.
