Step 1: Check the Headboard and Divan Are Compatible
Start by checking that the headboard is designed to work with your divan bed. The most important points are the bed size, headboard width, fixing method and strut spacing.
Check these measurements
- Mattress and divan size
- Overall headboard width
- Distance between the headboard struts
- Position of the divan's fixing holes or brackets
- Available headboard height
Step 2: Identify the Headboard Fixing System
Most divan-compatible headboards are attached using struts. These are vertical pieces fixed to the back of the headboard that slot against or into the divan's fixing points.
Strut Mounted
The headboard's struts attach directly to the divan base using bolts or other supplied fixings. This is the common option for divan beds.
Floor Standing
A floor-standing headboard supports itself from the floor rather than relying on the divan for structural support. Follow its specific assembly instructions.
Wall Mounted
A wall-mounted headboard is fixed to the wall rather than the divan. It should not be attached to the divan unless specifically designed for this.
Important
Do not assume that every headboard will fit every divan. If the fixing holes do not align, check the manufacturer's compatibility information rather than drilling new holes into the divan.
Step 3: Position the Headboard Struts
With the headboard close to the back of the divan, position the struts so that their holes line up with the fixing points.
- Place the headboard upright behind the divan.
- Align the struts with the fixing points.
- Check that both sides are positioned evenly.
- Use a spirit level if necessary to check that the headboard is straight.
- Have a second person hold the headboard while you fit the fixings.
Step 4: Attach the Headboard to the Divan
Insert the supplied bolts or fixings through the struts and into the divan's fixing points. Start each fixing loosely before tightening any of them fully.
Fit Both Sides First
Starting both sides before fully tightening makes it easier to adjust the headboard and keep it level.
Do Not Overtighten
Tighten the fixings firmly, but avoid excessive force that could damage the fixing point, strut or divan base.
Step 5: Set the Headboard Height
Before fully tightening the fixings, check the headboard's height and position. Some struts have multiple holes, allowing you to raise or lower the headboard.
- Check that the headboard is centred with the divan.
- Make sure it is at the desired height above the mattress.
- Check that the headboard is level from side to side.
- Confirm that the mattress does not cover or interfere with the intended fixing arrangement.
Step 6: Tighten and Check the Headboard
Once the position is correct, tighten all fixings evenly. Then gently test the headboard to make sure it is secure.
Final Safety Check
- All bolts or fixings are tight.
- The headboard is straight and centred.
- The struts are properly seated against the divan.
- There is no excessive movement or wobbling.
- No fixing is visibly damaged or incorrectly fitted.
Headboard Attachment Troubleshooting
The Holes Don't Align
Check the headboard size, strut spacing and divan fixing positions. Do not force the bolts into misaligned holes.
The Headboard Is Leaning
Loosen the fixings slightly, reposition the struts and check that both sides are set at the same height before tightening again.
The Headboard Wobbles
Check every fixing and make sure the struts are properly seated. If movement remains, confirm that the headboard is compatible with the divan.
The Bolts Won't Fit
Use only the supplied or specified fixings. Different headboards can use different bolt sizes and fixing systems.
